Hood Cleaners – What Do They Do?
Hood cleaners do not have a glamorous job, but they do a very important one. They help keep restaurants clean and safe for both workers and customers. A vent hood cleaning technician is responsible for the deep cleaning of the exhaust system, which can include ductwork, fans, grease traps, and filters. They use hot water and pressure washing to clean the entire system. They also use food safe caustic chemicals to break down grease and soapy water to rinse the system.
Kitchen exhaust systems are designed to vent out smoke, odors and heat from cooking equipment. However, over time grease can build up in the hood and ductwork, creating a fire hazard. The National Fire Protection Association outlines cleaning requirements for restaurant exhaust systems. Keeping the grease clogged up and cleaned out regularly by professionals can prevent these fires from destroying businesses.
From Grease Buildup to Fire Risk: Why Hood Cleaning Is Critical
To clean the exhaust hood and ductwork, technicians must first turn off the power. Then they disconnect the wiring, loosen screws and bolts, remove the fan assembly, and dismantle the ductwork. They also use caustic chemicals to break down and remove grease and other contaminants from the hood surfaces, ductwork, and fans. They may also use cleaning brushes and rags to wipe down the surface of the hood and the rest of the kitchen.
They then wash, scrub and polish the hood, exhaust fan, and ductwork until it is completely clean and shiny. After the hood is thoroughly cleaned, they turn the power back on and check for signs of wear and tear or any other problems with the system. Upon completion, they issue a service report and leave it with the restaurant.
