Types of Attic Insulation
The attic is a space often overlooked by homeowners until something goes wrong, like a leak in the ceiling or rodent infestation. However, it’s a key factor in your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Proper attic insulation can prevent warm air from escaping during winter and cool air from seeping in during summer, resulting in lower heating and cooling bills and less wasted energy.
Spray foam insulation also protects your roof and attic from moisture, which can lead to mold and mildew and structural damage over time. Additionally, it regulates temperature and reduces outside noise transmission.
There are several types of attic insulation available, each with different benefits and cost. The type you choose depends on your climate, budget and specific needs.
Blanket Insulation (Batts & Rolls)
Made from pre-cut fiberglass panels, blanket insulation is typically easy for DIYers to install. It is relatively inexpensive and has a high R-value.
Blown-In Cellulose Insulation
Using a blowing machine, loose-fill cellulose insulation is blown into your attic to fill gaps and cover uneven surfaces. It is dense, and fills nooks and crannies more effectively than other types of attic insulation. It is made from recycled paper products and treated with boric acid for flame resistance, making it eco-friendly.
Spray Foam Insulation
Available in open and closed-cell versions, spray foam expands upon application to fill gaps and cracks, creating an airtight seal for increased efficiency and comfort. It is extremely versatile and a quick installation option. Professional installation is recommended as it requires safety gear including goggles, a face mask and protective clothing.
